Seriously…therapy?

What can I get from therapy-
There are so many benefits from therapy, when connected with the right therapist and the individual is willing to do the work necessary. Unfortunately, our society treats therapy, mental illness and life struggles with such disregard and lack of understanding. The common attitude or perception is “there must be something really wrong with you to get therapy” or “suck it up and get over it, that’s no big deal.” I will be doing a series on the benefits and tips for therapy, to hopefully lesson the stigma on therapy and mental illness; with the goal of encouraging at least one person to reach out for help!

3 essentials from therapy

1) Human Connection

With the evolultion of social media and the dependence on the Internet, we seek answers for everything from recipes, how to fix that “airplane” noise on the car, to what colors to use when planning a baby shower. When it comes to relationship issues, stress, grief, trauma, depression, anxiety, etc; there are only so many answers we can get on the Internet and through social media. We were made to connect with others and it’s through our relationships that we best work through our “stuff.” Connecting with the right therapist and feeling comfortable in the therapeutic relationship, is the first and most important step to make.

2) The No Judgement Zone

Do you have friends and family that you can call or txt anytime of the day and can get honest feedback? If you do, count your blessings. And even if you do, are there things you hold back on for fear of judgement? The therapeutic relationship is a place to explore your fears, goals and best kept secrets without fear of being judged or experiencing that awkwardness at the next family or social “get together.”

3) Validation

When dealing with life stressors, relationship conflicts, or just everyday stuff, we often feel isolated and alone. Therapy can be a place to finally feel understood and know that you are not “crazy.” You are just an individual trying to make it through in this thing called “life” and a little support and validation is not too much to ask for.
